History of the Weaving Store

Mountain Valley Developmental Services, a non-profit organization, provides opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.

 

In 1988, Mountain Valley received an endowment (and three looms!) from a local Aspen family to start a weaving program.  Individuals receiving services from Mountain Valley who expressed an interest in the craft were taught to weave.  For several years, their handwoven products were sold at local fairs and holiday bazaars.  In 1996, the program was expanded to include a production weaving studio and retail shop that provided an opportunity for the weavers to work in a community setting.  Later that year, Mountain Valley Textiles and Gifts opened its doors at 209 8th Street in downtown Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

 

The weaving studio and retail store provides the weavers with the opportunity to work in the community and helps foster their independence.  The pride they feel for their work is evident and they have received many accolades for their handwoven products. 

 

We invite you to stop by when you're in the area and watch the weavers at work Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

 

 

 

Our designer carefully plans the colors and patterns before threading the looms in preparation for the weaver's work.  Each loom is set up to match the individual weaver's ability as patterns vary in complexity.  Plain weave, point twill, pinwheel, modified twill, log cabin, M and O, and a basketweave/twill combination are all weaving patterns produced and sold through our store.  Our unique, handwoven items are all tagged with the name of the weaver who crafted the fabric and we also include with your purchase an insert that explains our store and our mission.

 

Please note, although we do our best to be as color accurate as possible, there may be slight shade variances from the photo to the final product.
